Choosing the Right Garment
Choosing the right garments for your project can be overwhelming and confusing. There are thousands of options from multiple vendors but we have outlined some helpful information below and if you have any questions feel free to contact us because part of our job is being experts in garment selection as well.
There are many different types of material that a t-shirt can be made out of but the most common are cotton or polyester. There are two basic types of cotton; carded and ring spun cotton.
Carded cotton falls under our basic category of t shirt, typically available in a heavier garment weight, decent color selection. Popular searchable brands include Gildan, Port & Company, Port Authority, and Fruit of the Loom. Popular with contractors and other small businesses they also make an affordable event shirt. Sizing on these particular garments is usually more generous.
Ring Spun cotton is softer than carded cotton due to the spinning process of creating the actual fibers that go into producing the fabric. Typically more of a retail fit so these shirts are true to size. Popular searchable brands include District, Bella Canvas, Next Level, and some Port & Company models.
Polyester or Dry Fit material is great for performance wear. It is more wrinkle resistant than cotton, more stain resistant and is durable. Popular searchable brands include Sport Tek, Ogio, Nike, and New Era.
Along with the above options there are blends of various materials for t-shirts, hoodies and polos that include cotton, polyester, modal, rayon, viscose, and even recycled materials. Take a look at sanmar.com or ssactivewear.com and let us know which garments you are thinking of and we can provide further recommendations or feel free to swing by our showroom to take a look at our fan favorites. There are many different types of hat or caps that we can embroider on and they are made out of a wide range of materials. The two defining characteristics are structured caps and unstructured caps.
Structured caps are reinforced with buckram and will stand up on their own when they are not on your head. Popular structured caps include the Richardson 112.
Unstructured caps have no buckram and are typically a lower profile meaning they sit closer to the top of your head. A popular industry term is “dad hat” to describe an unstructured cap.
Along with the above characteristics you also have to choose between the type of closure, flat bill versus curved bill and colors. We work with multiple vendors that include Flexfit, Richardon Caps, Pacfic Headwear, New Era and many others.
Our industry isn’t just limited to t-shirts and hats we also embellish hoodies, crewnecks, polos, outerwear, jackets, and safety gear. Popular brands include The North Face, Eddie Bauer, Carhartt, Red Kap, Augusta Sportswear, Badger, Dri Duck, CornerStone, Hanes, Champion, and Russell Outdoors.
